March 3, 2008 Live Show

366photos -- not a participant of this group, but I sure am enjoying what the others of you are doing. Well worth a conversation, and even maybe do this as an illustrated podcast? Hmmmmm??? - RAS
TLt Summit

-- okay, this may be my favourite topic for the podcast. Why? 'Cause we need to talk about this stuff anyway, and it would be cool (I think) to actually broadcast live as we do the social negotiation for our session. Think about it: we can generate the ideas and structure for the session during the broadcast, and ultimately have much of the planning for our session completed when we're done! Hey, I like the two birds - one stone (no, Alec, not 2 G 1 C) approach.:-) Whadayathink? - RAS

Viral Professional Development (VPD)

Note for the future: We really should revisit the "Twitter as Community" idea. Rob, Heather and I are threatening to do something with this, and maybe it would be a neat idea to do a posse podcast on it, and then follow it up with a formal publication, with all of us as authors. I think it has strong possibilities, and if we start it off with another live conversation, it would be interesting to see where it leads. There's also the meta-analysis issue of moving between worlds to make our ideas public. Issues of intent, rigour, freedom, affordance, audience vs. "readership", academic cred vs. street cred. This is another pregnant idea: okay, I won't say "there's a thesis in it." -RAS

09:26 SharonP : After reading A Whole New Mind, have challenged myself to take my camera with me randomly a lot more
09:26 JSigler : Think of all the digital storytelling students could do if each one had a digital camera
09:26 SharonP : If they have a cell phone, they have a camera!
09:26 thekyleguy : it is a disease, a learning disease
09:26 greatnews : just seeing what people have chosen to photograph is so motivational!

09:28 KarenJanowski : @rdrunner - thanks!
09:28 thekyleguy : you can still join KarenJan
09:29 greatnews : how do we join in the fun?
09:29 courosa : karen, see one of Darcy's posts around beginning of Jan or or end of December ... her put together his pics from last year in a video/slideshow, and he really inspired many others.
09:29 courosa : kyle, you know where that link is?
09:29 KarenJanowski : might consider it - need to have my son join since he's taking an independent study in digital photography in HS
09:29 rdrunner-1 : Go to flickr - find the 366photos group, and join!
09:29 thekyleguy : @greatnews start taking pictures, join flickr and find the project http://www.flickr.com/groups/366photos/pool/

09:31 KarenJanowski : how do you decide which one to upload for the day?
09:31 thekyleguy : there are a few different 366 projects, but they are not as cool as us
09:31 JLWagner : my camera is always in my purse -- I need to remember to start using it
09:32 thekyleguy : Yeah, can you chat about tagging a bit
09:32 courosa : for your twitterers, edtech posse are @shareski, @mctoonish, @schwier, @robwall, @courosa

09:34 rdrunner-1 : @sharon - that link is a great read
09:34 robwall : Kyle, you are the link-meister.
09:35 SharonP : wow, we could have used this for my social computing course (grad course EdTech) two and a bit years ago
09:35 thekyleguy : Thanks Rob
09:35 rdrunner-1 : D'Arcy sound keeps cutting out - anybody else?
09:35 JLWagner : a bit -- but still great to hear
09:35 blamb : Enough history D'Arcy -- start singing!
09:35 thekyleguy : a little Cindy
09:35 JLWagner : excellent shot!!
09:35 courosa : yea, he's cutting out a bit, but mostly good
09:36 robwall : D'Arcy's sound is good here, so it will sound good in podcast.
09:36 robwall : @blamb - I'll pass that along.
09:37 SharonP : hmmmm.... I know some peeps who could use this.....
09:37 KarenJanowski : what's the application that allows us to see your desktop in uStream? it's mac only isn't it?
09:38 rdrunner-1 : EduGlu sounds really exciting - following to see how it unfolds
09:38 shareski : @karenJ....camtwist for the MAc but I use ManyCam for the PC
09:39 greatnews : iShowU is also great for Mac
09:39 rdrunner-1 : lost sound ;-(
09:39 courosa : i am using camtwist right now, this is how you see this slideshow
09:39 mctoonish-1 : Me too. I think we lost Rob or Alec on Skype.
09:39 shareski : I make my students go public...is that bad?
09:39 thekyleguy : I heard students from U of C a masters course that used eDol
09:40 courosa : no sound?
09:40 greatnews : didn't know you could do so much with Drupal!! awesome!
09:40 SharonP : I think that is fantastic.... public and private, groups and tags, all that is what we need for online social spaces
09:40 DavidJakes : yes, Drupal sounds awesome
09:40 thekyleguy : eDol sounded like a walledgarden blogging tool
09:40 courosa : Drupal is a very flexible tool with a REALLY strong and dedicated user community.
09:41 SharonP : I think having that flexibility to your posts is important
09:41 courosa : When you install Drupal, you have the support of the network.
09:41 JLWagner : I really nened to talk to our Photo Teacher -- HE SHOULD be doing this
09:41 jutecht : Drupal is very flexible in allowing private/public
09:41 courosa : cindy!
09:41 classroomqueen : We have Drupal based web/blogs at Regina Public School
09:41 thekyleguy : Dean get to work
09:42 DavidJakes : absolutely, I agree with the ownership
09:42 thekyleguy : funny seeing the job list photos
09:42 classroomqueen : I haven't used them too much because I find classblogmeister so user friendly
09:42 mctoonish-1 : I'm taking getting dropped from Skype as a sign that I should be off to bed. Sorry I couldn't stay longer. Have fun everyone.
09:42 SharonP : online social spaces are morphing
09:42 shareski : group blogs don't work
09:42 rdrunner-1 : @courosa I looked away and missed it... but thought you all should see my face!
09:42 SharonP : it really depends on what you need the social space for
09:43 rdrunner-1 : @courosa I've gotten much more comfortable online
09:43 greatnews : loved that collage on the black dress! :-)
09:43 jutecht : Group blogs work...but there has to be a reason
09:43 rdrunner-1 : there's jen's pic from Northern voice - a collage of memories
09:43 KarenJanowski : thanks @shareski - need to capture a PC desktop in ustream next week so it's good to know there's an option
09:43 jutecht : you can have ownership in a group blog
09:43 SharonP : I think since wikis and google docs have become ubiquitous, group blogs are not happening so much
09:43 shareski : @jutecht....point taken
09:43 courosa : @rdrunner ... and that is very cool ... love the way you've connected
09:44 rdrunner-1 : I think the flickr group is like Twitter - very relationship building
09:44 courosa : agreed
09:44 SharonP : a blog is an online social space, some classes are using it with appointed scribes
09:44 jutecht : @shareski group blogs fail because they have the wrong purpose
09:44 KarenJanowski : do you check each others photo additions every day?
09:44 classroomqueen : I like wikis for group work.
09:44 rdrunner-1 : northern voice jam perhaps?
09:45 greatnews : @KarenJanowski--you are asking all of my questions!! Thanks :-)
09:45 thekyleguy : not everyday Karen
09:45 rdrunner-1 : @Karen - pretty much. I know that I check when I upload
09:45 EdTechVision : i like indiv blogs that are connected - like 21 classes
09:45 jutecht : On ustream :)
09:45 KarenJanowski : @greatnews - any other questions?
09:45 thekyleguy : i am actually thinking my project will be 300/2008
09:46 classroomqueen : @EdTechVision. Exactly. My students love having their own blog pages
09:46 KarenJanowski : still impressive thekyleguy
09:46 thekyleguy : hard to get photo everyday
09:46 greatnews : just the RSS question--can we get a feed on the 366 photos?
09:46 shareski : @jutecht....you should blog about that since I've only had bad experience with group blogs
09:46 SharonP : I am delighted to see that so many more options are available for online environments
09:46 jutecht : @shareski...will do
09:47 rdrunner-1 : yes Rick - I read that post, it was very interesting to read as an old programmer/designer - sometimes we over-design
09:47 jutecht : @shareski Student 2.0 is a group blog and works..why....purpose and understanding. :)
09:47 JSigler : I agree with jutecht - your tool should depend on your purpose
09:47 DavidJakes : @shareski. Not surprised
09:47 DavidJakes : @jutecht. Students 2.0. They post twice a month!
09:48 DavidJakes : Even worse than me!
09:48 rdrunner-1 : @jutecht and @jsigler - blogged recently about that message - but if we get it for our students why can't we get if for ourselves? Want all the toys.
09:48 thekyleguy : theres Rob
09:48 KarenJanowski : but each post is a thoughtful essay @djakes
09:48 rdrunner-1 : love that shot
09:48 jutecht : @DavidJakes....so?
09:49 courosa : sound still good?
09:49 KarenJanowski : yes
09:49 thekyleguy : yep
09:49 DavidJakes : @jutecht: they claim to be the voice of students, I'd expect more
09:49 SharonP : think lately am blogging even less than that myself... yes, I should blog more!
09:49 greatnews : yes on sound
09:49 JSigler : Tech w/o purpose = toy, toy+purpose=learning
09:49 courosa : good good
09:49 thekyleguy : you microblog Sharon
09:49 classroomqueen : I have that green cup
09:49 DavidJakes : disappointed with their frequency based on their rollout and the level of expectation they created with that
09:49 thekyleguy : on twitter
09:49 SharonP : LOL to kyleguy
09:49 SharonP : too true
09:49 courosa : Woohoo!!! D'Arcy's coming to TLT!
09:50 JLWagner : TLT??
09:50 courosa : and Brian?
09:50 SharonP : but I have some deeper stuff coming .... soon
09:50 jutecht : @davidJakes they need more voices....not enough for a regular schedule
09:50 courosa : http://www.tltsummit.ca
09:50 JLWagner : thanks @courosa
09:50 thekyleguy : Nice sunset Shareski
09:50 jutecht : I'm all about personal blogs...we have 600+ students blogging.

09:50 JSigler : wow
09:50 rdrunner-1 : @jsigler my personal tech toys are all about my personal learning
09:50 jutecht : But group blogs can work...with the right purpose
09:51 SharonP : very cool
09:51 classroomqueen : Night all. I'll see some of you tomorrow night.
09:51 SharonP : will be at Vermont conference myself
09:51 blamb : All Posse, all the time

09:51 JSigler : @rdrunner-1 Me too
09:51 rdrunner-1 : @classroomqueen see you then
09:51 greatnews : @JSigler--is that your quote about tech and toys? would love to use it :-)
09:51 Mathman3329 : good night
09:51 KarenJanowski : @jutecht - who reads the blogs? what are their purposes?
09:51 DavidJakes : I know that feeling
09:51 blamb : D'Arcy better be ready

10:06 greatnews : I'm really interested in the option for PD credits or accreditation too--is it being done with Viral PD?
10:06 JLWagner : night @DavidJakes
10:06 thekyleguy : I know there was credit programs for the K12 online conference
10:07 thekyleguy : Good night David
10:07 traceymcgrath : Thanks @robwall
10:07 jutecht : High school teachers are the wost at that
10:07 thekyleguy : Everybody uses the tools differently
10:08 thekyleguy : we can try to support each other with hurdles
10:08 rdrunner-1 : agreed Rob. the elementary teachers seem more open to collaboration
10:08 JLWagner : sometimes silence means we are thinking
10:08 JLWagner : excellent show
10:08 JLWagner : 15 more minutes
10:08 rdrunner-1 : I think you're correct - that hs teachers are more used to teaching subject alone
10:08 greatnews : that really makes sense! we have explored incentives for teachers to participate in PD but this is much more authentic because it meets their needs
10:08 JSigler : I teach 3rd grade. I'm open.
10:08 thekyleguy : http://edtechposse.wikispaces.com/4.1
10:08 rdrunner-1 : @Jsigler - that would be my point
10:09 JLWagner : I am going to go take a picture of my Hawaii Drivers License for my 366 #1
10:09 DeanLoberg : I teach HS science in a small school. I'm open but just getting into "the Network'
10:09 jutecht : @jsigler I work K-12 and find elementary more open then high school
10:09 Mathman3329 : Time change on Sunday. Will be later next week!
10:09 jutecht : It is getting late...noon time for lunch!
10:09 shareski : http://injenuity.com/archives/103
10:10 JSigler : i think we can learn a lot from Kindergarten teachers.
10:10 JLWagner : @jutecht -- are you leaving??
10:10 thekyleguy : See ya Jeff
10:10 JLWagner : @JSigler -- YEP, I agree
10:10 thekyleguy : My wife is a Gr 1 teacher. I learn so much from her
10:10 Mathman3329 : Need to prove that it will work to most HS teachers but elementary teachers will try almost anything once.
10:10 jutecht : Later everyone...glad ustream working here again...yeah!
10:10 jutecht : Later
10:11 robwall : @JSigler - everything I really need to know ...
10:11 JLWagner : @Mathman3329 --- Elementary teachers are doing some exceptional things!!! Maria Knee is doing a 100 picture project could easily move into a 366 day project
10:11 greatnews : the comments on the photos are really interesting!
10:11 thekyleguy : that is nice Jen. The gist of 366. it really isn't it
10:11 JLWagner : can we see the JEN phone picture??
10:11 thekyleguy : not gist, gift
10:12 DeanLoberg : @mathman3239 maybe...the excuse I always get is time. No time to get all content as it is
10:12 JSigler : That looks like my daughter's play kitchen
10:12 traceymcgrath : Is Maria's 100 picture project a Kindergarten project?
10:12 JLWagner : She is a kindergarten teacher -- but I believe she has opened it to ELEMENTARY
10:12 JLWagner : let me grab the link
10:12 rdrunner : @deanloberg @mathman33 so any ideas beyond Rob's for working with hs teachers?
10:12 robwall : http://www.flickr.com/photos/dnorman/2282881807
10:13 Mathman3329 : @JLWagner - agreed. They have my utmost admiration.
10:13 rdrunner : I used a flashlight for one of my pictures
10:13 DeanLoberg : @rdrunner specific examples of how it meets the curriculum
10:14 traceymcgrath : I have a Kindergarten Teacher in CA and one at my school in Philly that are considering a collaboration project
10:14 thekyleguy : so how do you get away without the flash. I didnt catch all of that
10:14 rdrunner : @dean examples of how we might engage hs teachers in social learning when you need to be focused on curriculum and achievement tests
10:14 JLWagner : http://100thday.wetpaint.com/?t=anon
10:14 JLWagner : that is Maria's project
10:15 JLWagner : Tracey -- have them check my site -- http://www.jenuinetech.com for PreK6 projects
10:15 thekyleguy : there must be online screencasts on the camera Jen
10:15 traceymcgrath : I'm trying to get ideas to bring them together perhaps East meets West
10:15 traceymcgrath : \
10:15 JLWagner : yep -- they can easily do it
10:15 JLWagner : my St Patrick's day project has 627 classrooms all over the USA
10:15 Mathman3329 : @rdrunner Trying to give HS teachers very quick lessons and then time to play. I am going to try and leave how they can implement in the classroom to their own creation. Must find time to do this first.
10:16 thekyleguy : i like that. pool splashing
10:16 JLWagner : Yes, but just even mentioning TURN OFF THE FLASH -- I never would have thought of that
10:16 thekyleguy : you remember the stats you tell someone about
10:16 greatnews : each photo invites reflection and conversation--they are awesome learning tools!-love the concept of learning party
10:16 Mathman3329 : that's my home based business
10:16 JLWagner : what is the tag again for the 366 photos?? is it 366Photos??
10:16 DeanLoberg : @rdrunner....tough hey. most HS teachers I know just want the curriculum links and the results.
10:17 Mathman3329 : hockey cards that is
10:17 traceymcgrath : Thanks Jen I will definitely check it out. I just finished a big project with my middle schoolers so I'm readdy to focus my attention on this Kinder project
10:17 rdrunner : D'Arcy - are they knee-level pictures?
10:17 Mathman3329 : Thanks Jen
10:17 dnorman : knee level, but very interesting.
10:17 JLWagner : @tracey - wish them the best for me -- the younger age projects are great
10:17 thekyleguy : See ya Jen
10:17 dnorman : he shot photos at a wedding last year, and they were some of the best shots of the whole event
10:17 JLWagner : (not mine -- just in general)
10:17 rdrunner : It's a good learning to give a child a camera - we get to see their perspective on the world
10:18 shareski : I loved Evan's wedding pics
10:18 dnorman : evan took this: http://www.flickr.com/photos/dnorman/2099193079/
10:18 Mathman3329 : You need to talk to our techs Rick. I wish they had that attitude.
10:18 dnorman : and this http://www.flickr.com/photos/dnorman/1098135936/
10:18 greatnews : knee level shots is an interesting point--have you ever ridden in a wheelchair at a state fair--you get to experience what kids in strollers experience--legs & feet
10:18 Mathman3329 : Staff too
10:18 dnorman : and this http://www.flickr.com/photos/dnorman/2099974460/
10:19 henrythiele : Like a comment I heard several times last week - learn like in kindergarten
10:19 JLWagner : which one was Evan?? I have never seen him
10:19 JLWagner : @henrythiele -- HELLO
10:19 henrythiele : Hey Jen :)
10:19 dnorman : this is evan :-) http://www.flickr.com/photos/dnorman/260216065/
10:19 thekyleguy : photo is private D'arcy
10:19 dnorman : oops
10:20 JLWagner : @dnorman -- this is what I got -- Oops! You don't have permission to view this photo.
10:21 thekyleguy : I am failing 366, just changed goal to 300
10:21 Mathman3329 : Good point
10:21 JLWagner : I am going to start with 1 photo -- and see where we go from there
10:21 henrythiele : we learn way more from failing - look at every good scientist throughout history
10:22 thekyleguy : how about letting our students fail?
10:22 Mathman3329 : Experts don't make mistakes!!
10:22 henrythiele : Read Currie's story :)
10:22 dnorman : http://www.flickr.com/photos/dnorman/80300544/
10:22 dnorman : that's one of evan that's public, but it's old
10:22 DeanLoberg : Funny that in HS science we vary rarely let our students fail at anything but tests
10:22 henrythiele : I am ok with letting kids fail as long as it leads to success
10:22 Mathman3329 : We need to allow them to see that we are human and that we learn the same way they do.
10:22 JLWagner : That is an excellent picture -- but that is Evan??
10:22 henrythiele : Hard to fail at cookbook science
10:23 rdrunner : @D'Arcy - ooooh the glass floor - I couldn't step on it
10:23 robwall : @DeanLoberg - fantastic point.
10:23 JLWagner : I could not have done the glass floor
10:23 rdrunner : I like to tell my staff that the mistake is not what is important, it's what we learn from it
10:23 JLWagner : I heard it is not a mistake -- it is EXPERIENCE
10:23 Mathman3329 : @rdrunner - Exactly!!
10:23 henrythiele : @rdrunner - I get queasy just seeing the glass floor
10:24 JSigler : We do celebrate when someone makes a mistake, because that's when they learn the most
10:24 shareski : http://flickr.com/photos/dnorman/2308069120/in/pool-366photos
10:24 thekyleguy : I liked those in your 365/2007 project. it was like we were biking with you

10:25 shareski : that's a good point
10:25 JSigler : Past my bed time.
